The Women's Blues were founded in 1981 as Oxford University Women's Ice Hockey Club (OUWIHC). The team was put together mainly from Canadians (who knew how to skate) and field hockey players (who knew how to hold a stick), and trained a few times at the Bristol ice rink before taking the Cambridge University (Light) Blues on at a friendly. The first official Varsity Match was played the following year.
Over the years OUWIHC played in various leagues, including in EIHA Division 1 throughout the 1990s as the only university ice hockey team permitted to compete in an EIHA league. These were the team’s development years culminating in an 11-year Varsity winning streak 1997-2007. The team now competes in BUIHA (British Universities Ice Hockey Association) Division 3 for the first time, facing off with mainly men teams. The BUIHA league represents a challenge the team is eager to take and to win.
In 2005 OUWIHC merged with the Men's Blues and Vikings to form the present OUIHC. The constitutional change had no effect on the team's game: The Women's Blues have continued to play in the EIHA Division 1 Southern and Midlands league until 2010, and have contested the Varsity against Cambridge each year.
